airline information

Many of you will have seen the news this week about an increase in security measures at airports but what does this mean in practical terms for travellers over the coming months?

What are the new security measures?

Airline passengers entering and leaving the UK on ANY routes may be required to show that electronic and battery-powered devices in their hand luggage can be powered up or face not being allowed to bring the device onto the aircraft. This applies to ALL routes, not just those to and from the USA.

What electronic devices does it affect?

Any electronic or battery powered device in your hand luggage including mobile phones, laptops, tablets,  MP3 players, hairdryers or straighteners, cameras and camera equipment, travel irons and electric shavers.

Do the new security measures apply to items in checked in (hold) baggage?

The Department for Transport has not released guidelines for electronic items in hold luggage but passengers are advised to ensure that ALL electronic devices can be turned on when requested.

What happens if I cannot turn on my device when I get to security?

In the worst case scenario you may not be allowed to board your flight. Most UK airports have charging points and it is understood that passengers will be given the chance to go and charge their devices. Some additional charging points may also be available at airport security.

Some airlines including British Airways have indicated that uncharged electronic devices may be left with their staff and either collected on the return journey or sent onto passengers forwarding addresses at the airline’s cost. Some airlines have also indicated that they may offer passengers the chance to choose not to fly and rebook on a later flight (subject to availability) once their devices are charged. Please note that we cannot verify the policy of individual airlines and it is subject to change without notice. Please contact your airline prior to travel for the latest information.

In short, ensure your devices are charged and allow extra time at the airport!

Officially the Department for Transport has indicated that the new security measures should not delay boarding and affect flight schedules. However, common sense dictates that passengers should allow extra time for check-in wherever possible and try not to arrive at the airport at the last minute.

Information correct at 10.07.14. Please note that guidelines are constantly evolving and for the very latest information passengers should check with their airline or airport prior to travel.
Please see the Department of Transport website for more information.
