Overview

The Elysees Hotel is located close to the resort centre of downtown Hurghada. Built in 2008, this comfortable hotel offers modern and spacious accommodation in 175 rooms. The hotel boasts a range of facilities, including its own private sandy beach, two swimming pools and a relaxing spa.

Accommodation

The Elysees Hotel has 175 rooms in total, with 127 standard twin rooms and 48 apartments. These comfortable and stylish rooms have pool views, and 20 of the standard twin rooms have a balcony. Rooms are well equipped with air-conditioning, flat screen LCD Satellite TV, telephone, mini-bar and safety deposit boxes. Rooms offer en-suite facilities with shower and WC, and hairdryer.

Other Facilities

This well appointed hotel boasts two swimming pools (one heated in winter and one with swim up bar) plus a children's pool. Beach volleyball, table tennis, watersports and evening entertainment are offered. There is a shopping area, gym, sauna, Jacuzzi and spa offering a range of treatments. The Elysees private sandy beach is located across the road, opposite the hotel. Complimentary WiFi is available in the lobby.

There are a range of dining and entertainment options, including the main restaurant, Hollywood, serving hot and cold buffet, Lucky Dolphin English pub and restaurant, a coffee shop, beach bar and pool bar. There is also a beach disco.

There is a children's pool, kids club and playground.  

Location

The Elysees occupies a good location close to downtown Hurghada, just 15 minutes’ drive from the airport. Divers can choose to dive with either Divers' Lodge or Emperor Divers. Divers' Lodge is just 10 minutes' drive away from the hotel, located at the Movenpick Resort. Emperor Divers is located at the Hilton Hurghada Plaza Hotel, 25 - 30 minutes' drive via free transfer.

Dive info

Hurghada was the first commercial dive base in the Red Sea and is now a thriving resort that caters almost exclusively to divers. It offers a fantastic choice of dive sites, many of which are sheltered and within a thirty minute to one hour boat ride from resort. Outstanding reefs and drop-offs are available, whilst Hurghada’s location also gives access to the legendary wreck graveyard of Sha’ab Abu Nuhas.

Learning to Dive

Hurghada is the ideal place to dip your fins into the water for the first time. There are a large number of safe and sheltered sites that offer superb visibility to appreciate the fabulous marine life. Plentiful reefs sit in shallow water that is perfect for beginners. A full range of courses is offered at the dive centre and qualifying dives are undertaken at sites situated just a short boat ride away.

Qualified Divers

Hurghada’s many dive sites offer an abundance of reef marine life and an incredible diversity of corals, including impressive towers and pinnacles to explore. Sha’ab El Erg is a particular favourite, a huge horseshoe-shaped reef that is dotted with ergs and is renowned for its resident dolphin pod.

The spectacular marine park surrounding the Giftun Islands is a highlight, with nearly ten sites and a variety of dive plans to suit all experience levels. There is enough here to keep most intermediate and experienced divers completely absorbed, including an incredible wall tumbling to more than 50m, drift dives and spectacular gorgonian fans, plus the opportunity to see larger reef species and the occasional passing pelagic.

For wreck enthusiasts there is no better experience than a day boat trip to the incredible Sha’ab Abu Nuhas which is usually available at least once a week. Situated about halfway between Hurghada and Ras Mohammed, this reef patch lies next to a major shipping lane and it is home to four complete wrecks. It is magical to swim into a cloud of glassfish on the Chrisoula K and the Giannis D and see lionfish stalking prey in dark corners of the hold.

Divers' Lodge

Divers' Lodge is a PADI 5 star IDC facility, BSAC Premier Centre and the longest established TDI facility in the Middle East.  Established since 1993, Divers' Lodge offers a complete programme of recreational and technical diving, including courses, daily diving, special trips and snorkelling. The centre provides perfect training facilities with a pool on site and a bay for confined training.

Based at the Movenpick Resort Hurghada hotel, the centre allows for easy access to a wide variety of dive sites, some as close as 10 minutes from the centre. The local team at Divers Lodge have an amazing knowledge of both below the water and above and are always flexible, friendly and very welcoming, allowing all divers to feel at home.

Emperor Divers

Emperor Divers are a British-managed dive company who have been operating in the Red Sea since 1992.

Emperor Divers, based at the Hilton Plaza Hotel, is a PADI 5* IDC Centre. The centre offers a full range of dive courses, day boat diving, and snorkelling. There is a dive shop on site, a heated pool for training and fabulous views from the terrace and pool. Equipment is available for hire.

Special dive trips such as overnight Thistlegorm, Abu Nuhas and Safaga are available. Boats are moored on a jetty next to the dive centre. Free transfers are provided from all hotels in the resort.

Resort info

Hurghada was once a traditional fishing village but now is a thriving, busy resort well-known to divers. Downtown Hurghada has some colourful bazaars and great shopping opportunities for leather, gold, carpets and cloth. It is also possible to combine diving with a trip to visit the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Temples in Luxor.

Tours available include boat trips, sunset cruises and jeep safaris into the desert where you can join the Bedouin for a traditional meal. A popular trip is a 1-day tour to Luxor to see the magnificent Valley of the Kings and Temples of Karnak and Luxor.

Getting Around

The downtown area is a short trip in a microbus taxi but many shops are within walking distance from the main hotels.

Climate 

The hottest time of the year is July and August with air temperature of over 30 ºC. The coolest time is January with the temperature at around 20 ºC. Rainfall is negligable and it is invariably sunny but breezes can be cool.

Egypt is 2 hours ahead of GMT.

Currency

Egyptian pounds or LE. Approximately £1 = 9LE

We recommend that you take some money in Cash to Egypt. There is a currency exchange desk available at the hotel.  Please note that Scottish notes and Australian Travellers Cheques are not accepted in Egypt.

Tipping

Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to travellers for personal recognition of the services offered. We would advise that you allow approx. £10 for gratuities for local staff for the duration of your stay.

Flight Information

From London Gatwick and Manchester airports direct to Hurghada every Monday, Tuesday & Friday. Regional departures are also available from the following airports:

Flight duration: Approx 5 - 5½ hours

Transfer: Varies according to hotel choice. Minimum transfer time is approx. 10 minutes, maximum transfer time is approximately 20 minutes from the airport.

Passports

Passengers travelling to Egypt must have six months valid on their passport from the date of departure from Egypt.

Visas

A single entry tourist visa for Egypt is required for all nationalities. For British passport holders with British citizenship, Egyptian visas can be obtained conveniently and inexpensively on arrival at Hurghada airport.

Other nationalities should check with consular office.

Vaccinations

There are no compulsory vaccinations for travel to Egypt, but we recommend protection against typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis A and polio. Though malaria does exist in Egypt, it is generally not present in the coastal resorts.

Vaccination requirements are subject to change and should be confirmed before departure.  For the most up to date advice please consult your travel clinic.
