Bali, Flores, Komodo & the Alors

Heading east from Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands stretch from Bali in the west to Timor in the east. Verdant mountains, fine sand beaches, crystal clear seas and healthy coral reefs are the distinguishing features of many of these beautiful islands. Volcanic in origin, the area is a centre of marine biodiversity and has only recently been recognised for the superb world class diving that it has to offer.

Diving in Bali

Bali is the main entry point in to this fascinating region. The island has a rich cultural heritage set against a backdrop of volcanic mountains, which rise to 3000 metres above sea level. This mountain range effectively separates the northern coast of Bali from the developed resorts of southern Bali. The Balinese themselves are renowned for their hospitality, which contributes to the islands ongoing appeal to overseas visitors. Bali’s best dive sites are concentrated off the North Western coast of Bali. The area is relatively undeveloped and retains much of the charm that has been drawing visitors back to the island year after year. The small village of Pemuteran affords an ideal base from which to enjoy the diving around Menjangan Island and the macro delights of secret bay. Diving from our two resorts in the north-west Pemuteran region or the north-east Tulamben region can be taken as a holiday in its own right, or as a land based extension to a liveaboard. Diving in Flores & Komodo

Located east of Bali and just below the equator, the Komodo National Park, officially declared a World Heritage Site in 1991, encompasses 132,000 hectares of marine waters making it one of the largest protected zones on the planet. The parks borders incorporate the islands of Rinca, Padar and Komodo along with several smaller isles. Current, wave and wind erosion has created an incredible variety of coastal and marine habitats, providing in turn some of the worlds finest dive sites.

The island of Komodo itself is home to a rare diversity of animals, including a population of the world's largest lizard, the famous Komodo Dragons (Varanus komodoensis).

Regaldive offer 4 liveaboards, the Komodo Dancer, part of the renowned Dancer fleet, Mermaid I & II and Moana, which offer a variety of itineraries across this region. In addition, the island of Flores, on the Komodo National Park boundaries, offers a resort based stay with daily boat diving.

Ambon & The Alors

The Alor Island regency, located at the eastern end of the lesser Sunda’s, comprises the two main islands of Pantar and Alor, as well as a number of smaller isles. The undeveloped Alor regency is home to just two percent of Indonesia's population. The Alor Straight is a first class, undiscovered scuba diving region and one of Indonesia's best kept diving secrets.

The water's surrounding the Alor regency are extremely rich with varied reef profiles, including walls, seamounts, rocky outcrops, and pristine coral-reefs. The secret dive site in the Kalibahi Bay is home to harlequin shrimp, sea horses, ghost pipefish, wonderpus, mimic octopus and hairy frogfish.

Sustainable fishing practices and eco tourism are prevalent in the Alor Island region and there are few signs of reef degradation. Opportunities abound to interact with the locals on the various islands, who are a traditional seafaring people. Visibility underwater is extremely good, the water is warm and the density of divers is minimal making Alor a perfect tropical scuba diving destination.

This region is accessed by the limited itineraries run on Komodo Dancer each year.
