The Socorro Islands are located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, approximately 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the tip of the Baja peninsula.

Guadalupe is a remote volcanic island that lies 150 miles off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Home to the ocean’s most iconic and often misunderstood predator, this region of the Pacific Ocean is sometimes referred to as ‘White Shark Café’ and for good reason.

From the mainland, divers can explore the ocean reefs along the Riviera Maya coastline. The reefs have a colourful mix of classic Caribbean corals and are populated by large shoals of grey snapper and porkfish, which form highways along the overhangs. I also saw spider crabs, nurse sharks, flounders, flamingo tongue snail, and plenty more marine life.

The name bull shark comes from the short, blunt snout and their strange inclination to charge (head-butt) their pray before attaching. At over three metres in length and thick bodies, bull sharks sightings in Playa del Carmen are a true diving highlight of the area.
