ocean film festival

Fans of the big screen will enjoy the UK tour of the Ocean Film Festival this September and October. The Festival aims to inspire people to explore, respect, enjoy, and protect our oceans and screens a selection of themed films from independent film makers across the globe.

During the next few weeks the Festival will be visiting locations as far apart as Inverness and Truro. Each screening includes 10 films of varying lengths and styles covering topics such as the oceanic environment, marine creatures, ocean related sports, coastal cultures and ocean lovers.

Films include:

Alive: Out of Air
6 minutes
On an expedition to the Arctic, filmmaker Adam Ravetch took a decision which very nearly cost him his life. Terrified and thinking his life was over, Ravetch was forced to watch from below, as his guide desperately tried to hack away at the ice above him. A miraculous story of survival.

Duct Tape Surfing
5 minutes
18 years ago, a car accident left Pascale Honore paralysed from the waist down. Fascinated by the ocean, Pascale dreamed of being able to surf. With the help of a roll of duct tape and with the support her sons' friend Tyron Swan, a big wave surfer and professional diver, Pascale's dream eventually became a reality. Share in her joy.

Immersion
7 minutes
This exclusive tour edit of the multi-award winning surf documentary Immersion will have your heart racing and palms sweating. Discover the science behind what makes the perfect wave as you witness some of surfing's greatest talents take on monster swells at Shipstern's Bluff, about 30km off Tasmania's south coast.

People Under the Sea
26 minutes
By placing 400 statues on a seabed in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Mexico, artist Jason deCaires Taylor was able to combine his two lifelong passions: scuba diving and sculpture. This film captures his journey as he transforms the seafloor into a huge underwater museum for visitors to explore while diving, or admire from the surface with a mask.

The Giant & The Fishermen
12 minutes
Discover the incredible friendship that develops between two beings linked by the sea: whale sharks and fishermen. Rather than hunting them for their fins, the fishermen believe the sharks are a symbol of good luck. This film tells the remarkable tale of the unlikely friendship that exists between these two competing predators.
