Dive info
Safaga offers some exceptional diving and is still relatively undiscovered. Tucked in just south of Hurghada, most diving is conducted by boat to reach the spectacular offshore reefs and wall dives of sites like Panorama Reef, Middle Reef and Abu Kafan.
Learning to Dive
Despite the area’s reputation for exciting wall diving, Safaga is also a good choice for novice divers. Several reefs are situated just 30 minutes boat ride away and offer several sheltered spots ideal for beginners to get their sea legs.
The Tobia reefs, or the Seven Pinnacles as they are often known, are particularly stunning and boast beautifully coloured corals and a huge variety of fish including schooling juvenile barracuda, stingrays, trigger fish, puffers and groupers. Shallow coral gardens such as Gamul Soghira and Gamul Kebira are also superb for spotting myriad reef fish in kaleidoscope colours.
Qualified Divers
As you head further away from the coast, Safaga offers more challenging and breathtaking sites where the diving is concentrated primarily on three areas.
Panorama Reef is the most northerly and it is situated around a 60-90 minute boat ride from Safaga. Due to the currents, this site is one of the highlights of the area and best dived as a drift dive. There are huge coral formations with walls dropping to over 200m and numerous grottos and overhangs, gorgonians and soft corals. Jacks, barracudas and reef sharks often visit the area and a well-known family of napoleon wrasse are frequently sighted.
Middle Reef is best known for its colourful and dramatic hard coral gardens, including spectacular brain corals, which are rated as some of the best in the Red Sea.
Abu Kafan, or ‘the deep one’, is probably the most spectacular dive site in Safaga with stunning, sheer walls plummeting towards the seafloor hundreds of metres below. Luxuriant soft corals, gorgonians and black corals abound and this is a regular haunt of schooling barracuda, reef sharks and turtles.
Wreck enthusiasts are often drawn to Safaga to visit the Salem Express, an Egyptian passenger ferry that sank on its return journey from Mecca in 1991. 300 victims perished in one of the greatest marine tragedies of all time. This is a stunning site but a dive that is generally considered one for reflection rather than pleasure.

The House Reef is One of the Best Kept Secrets in the Red Sea
"Our recent trip to Coral Garden resort was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The rep at the airport was very helpful and we were helped through security and with visas very quickly. Transport was awaiting us and was comfortable and air conditioned.
The hotel staff are friendly and helpful and the coral garden house reef is, I think, one of the best kept secrets in the red sea. Closely guarded by dive centre staff, the reef does not allow visits from day boats in to the bay and even in the windiest weather you can just walk out on the sandy entrance site and dive both sides of the reef.
The entrance in to the water is just 25m from the dive centre which is well equipped with all new equipment. Dugong regularly visit the sea grass area in the centre of the bay and we saw one when we were there. Sea horses are also found on the sea grass area and there are turtles a plenty and even some rarities like ghost pipe fish which I saw snorkeling!
The dive centre is exceptionally well managed and one of our party passed her open water exams in just 4 days. The tuition was excellent. The hotel is small just about 40 rooms but the rooms are clean and spacious and ours had sea views. It is only a 3 star hotel so no hair dryers or kettles and wifi is only available in the bar area. But we will be returning for our fifth visit in the autumn which I think says it all!"

Coral Garden Resort
"Really enjoyable diving holiday! Although the rooms are basic, they are clean, comfortable, spacious, and colourfully decorated. The resort is set in attractive gardens and the beach/bar areas are clean and tidy, with plenty of shelter from the sun. Breakfast and evening meals were of a good standard, with a wide variety of dishes including some local specialties. Lunch and drinks from the bar are reasonably priced in Euros, payable at the end of your stay. Although the resort seems to have mostly German guests, the local staff speak good English and are both thoughtful and helpful.
The resort is very well run. Orca Dive Centre is close to hand and is very well organised by German staff, who all speak good English, with the help of locals. Nitrox is freely available (to those who are qualified) and all cylinders use DIN as standard. The north reef is more sheltered from the wind than the south reef. Both are steep and varied, with a wide range of sea life right up to the beach. The south reef is a longer swim and has rugged pinnacles and a beautiful shallow coral garden that is ideal both for diving and for snorkelling (if the wind allows). You are highly likely to see a turtle or two in the shallow sea grass at the centre of the bay.
Unless you start very early during the winter season and/or make short dives, there is no need to book more than 2 dives per day because you start to lose light in the bay from mid-afternoon onwards."
Tony Ingram - Salisbury
Great Snorkelling Place!
"We have just returned from our second year here. Being able to walk straight into the sea is excellent for me as I have a back disability. There was enough exciting sea life along the house reef and grass beds to keep us busy (snorkelling) for the whole week. The staff are friendly and helpful; the food is good and the rooms are comfortable.
We shall be returning next year! Thank you.

Fantastic Holiday - Great Dives on the Wonderful House Reefs
"Fantastic holiday as expected. Great dives on the wonderful house reefs - scorpion fish everywhere if you look carefully, stone fish, crocodile fish, squid, mackerel, juvenile catfish and all the usual suspects. Both reefs are great and both are different - bigger fish on the south reef - dugong, turtles and giant barracuda in the sea grass. There are two giant barracudas, so look carefully - one has vertical stripes and one has horizontal stripes.
Staff are all wonderfully friendly, Tom, Sonja and all the crew at Orca are very helpful and friendly as well. You don't have to sign in advance for house reef dives, just wander in whenever you get the urge - nitrox in plentiful supply, usually at 220-230 bar. No restriction on length of dive - until your air runs out if you wish!
Food is simple, but tasty and adequate, rooms basic but OK. Don't expect 4 star luxury. Take your own shampoo and if you are taking a lady, take your own hair dryer. We take a travel kettle, coffee and powdered milk because there is none in the rooms. We will try something different next year, but definitely going back the following year.

A Gem of a Place!
"I think this is a gem of a place. Comfortable rooms, good food, friendly service, cool beer, free nitrox, useful water close by, intelligent and helpful dive centre staff and only an hour or so from Hurghada. This is my third or fourth trip, and the second this year, and it continues to please. OK, I am disabled and I do need some help getting in the water, but as I said the dive crew are helpful and the hotel staff (suitably notified prior) did give me a room close to where I need to be. Other guests tend to be international, German and Swiss predominating, but the friendliness is worth experiencing, but then they are divers too!"
Tom Wilton - Chesterfield, Derbyshire
We will Definitely be Returning to this Little Gem
"Just returned from a great holiday. This is a dive centre with a hotel so nearly everyone is a diver. The hotel is small situated on a small bay with two reefs (N and S) to dive. Lots to see and virtually no current so ideal of any level of diver. Boat and shore dives also available. Orca Dive centre is excellent - very well organised with a very friendly and helpful team. Most of the guests are German speaking but usually manage some English and all were friendly. All the dive team speak English. A handful of Brits - please come because you are missing out on a great place!
The hotel is very relaxed - just shorts and tops needed. It is not four star luxury but perfectly adequate and clean. If you want a hairdryer, bring your own though. The evening buffet is well cooked and whilst not a huge choice, there is always something tasty on the menu. The bar snacks at lunch time are very good and better than many hotels I have stayed in.
Regaldive were very helpful sorting out our booking and everything was as described. The only downside was the transfer to the hotel. It should have taken about an hour from Hurghada but was nearer two because we had to detour to drop another couple off at a different hotel. On the return transfer there was just the two of us and it took less than an hour to get back to the airport so check this before your book.
We will definitely be returning to this little gem."
