Mexico Resorts
With everything from thrilling Cenote dives to the mighty whale sharks, Mexico offers a multitude of magical experiences for those looking to dive from resort.
Resort-diving in Mexico tends to be concentrated in the beautiful Yucatan peninsula. Here, beautiful Caribbean waters meet with the Americas, providing a delightful mix of diving and topside experiences.
The highlight for many is the incredible Cenotes. These natural sinkholes were thought to have formed 66 million years ago with the meteorite that is also credited with wiping out the dinosaurs. Now, they are a wonderful divers' playground, offering an absolutely unique and beautiful environment that is accessible to most divers, and even snorkellers.
The wonderful coral walls of Cozumel are another highlight of this special region. Home to vibrant marine life including turtle and eagle ray, this small island offers some of the finest resort-based diving opportunities in the Caribbean.
Add ancient Mayan sites and beautiful beaches into the mix, and it's no wonder Mexico is one of the top dive destinations in the world.

Where’s the best resort-based diving in Mexico?
The majority of Mexico’s resort-based diving options lay along her easternmost shore, where the beautiful Yucatán Peninsula reaches out into the azure blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The coastline south of Cancun from Playa del Carmen down to Tulum tempts divers with an intoxicating mix of colourful reef dives and Cenotes. These incredible flooded limestone sinkholes dot the landscape and make for a truly unique dive experience; the highlight of many divers’ holiday.
Around ten miles offshore, the charming island of Cozumel is something of a divers’ paradise. Visibility can be spectacular while divers will marvel at the stunning corals, walls and slopes that make up the island’s dive sites. Known for outstanding drift diving that those with a little experience will enjoy, professional dive centres do also cater for beginners.
Well-appointed hotels offer a range of excellent accommodation options in both locations, with a choice of pools and restaurants on offer, and all-inclusive options available. Divers looking for an extended stay can combine the mainland with a stay on Cozumel, while tailor-made extensions to see more of the incredible Yucatán Peninsula can also be arranged.
What to see when
Mexico is blessed with excellent marine life throughout the year. Turtle, eagle ray and reef shark regularly seen on dives throughout this region.
Those hoping to make a day trip to Isla Mujeres to catch a whale shark should time their visit between June and September, when these gentle giants gather around the waters north of Cancun to feed. July and August tend to see the largest numbers of whale sharks, but are also the most popular months to visit.
Adrenaline junkies looking to encounter bull shark should visit between December and March, when the cooler temperatures attract these apex predators. Safe and educational diving trips are offered during these months to divers with at least 25 logged dives.
About Mexico Resorts
When is the best time to resort dive in Mexico?
Resort-based diving in Mexico can be enjoyed at any time of year, with the seasons in the Yucatan Peninsula following those of the wider Caribbean region.
The cooler months from December to April are also drier and less humid, while June to October are hotter and wetter, but still very popular. The diving remains excellent throughout the year.
Who is resort diving in Mexico suitable for?
With so much on offer, Mexico attracts the full range of diving enthusiasts.
Those looking for a learn-to-dive holiday will not be disappointed. Professional dive tuition and calm, clear conditions are ideal for completing your Open Water course. The Open Water course equips you to safely venture down to 18 metres with a buddy by your side. Regaldive can even bundle this certification with your holiday package for a hassle-free adventure. Learn the ropes through online or classroom sessions, practice in a pool-like setting, and then take the plunge into the ocean. By the end, you'll be a confident underwater explorer!
More experienced divers will also love the Cenotes or drift diving in Cozumel, while Mexico’s Caribbean coast is a popular destination for groups and dive clubs, with attractive group offers available in the quieter months.
Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula offers so much more than just diving, and a resort-based holiday opens up opportunities to explore more on land. Day trips can be arranged to incredible Mayan sites such as Chichen Itza or Tulum, while families may enjoy a day out at Xcaret. The area also has superb restaurants and nightlife, excellent shopping and world-class white sand beaches.
Those looking to combine a diving holiday with time on land can extend their holiday on a tailor-made basis, with an additional four or five days giving the time needed to fully explore the wonders of the Yucatan.
