Where's the best liveaboard diving in the Red Sea?

Northern Red Sea Liveaboards

Regaldive offer liveaboard itineraries departing from Hurghada throughout the year and taking in the many highlights of this region.

The reef at Abu Nuhas is accessible from Hurghada with several wrecks resting at its base. You can also visit the Straits of Gubal and the famous Thistlegorm World War II wreck. Most boat itineraries may also take in the Ras Mohammed national park, where steep coastal cliffs are mirrored underwater with impressive vertical walls dropping to 70m or more.

The Strait of Tiran has a range of reefs rising out of deep waters where the strong currents and dense plankton attract an impressive range of reef and deep-sea species providing some exceptional drift dives. Some departures to the northern Red Sea also divert south to take in the Brothers Islands.

Southern Red Sea Liveaboards

There are many world-class dive sites in the southern Red Sea, and Regaldive offer several routes and itineraries.

The Brothers are two small isolated reefs 40km north east of El Quseir. Big Brother Island has a lighthouse and a fringing reef with a sheer plunge to exceptional depths. The diving is quite challenging with deep wrecks and strong currents. Tuna, barracuda, scalloped hammerhead, oceanic white tip, silky shark and reef shark can all be spotted here.

Little Brother is considered to be one of the most scenic dives in the Red Sea. The drop off is over 40 metres but the walls are covered in sponges, anemones, soft corals and black coral. Some of the huge gorgonian fan corals are more than three metres high and there are caves, holes and overhangs in the shallow part of the reef. Currents can be strong and because there is little shelter and strong winds, access is very much weather dependent.

Elphinstone is a site best dived early in the day and there is little protection against wind and waves, making a liveaboard visit ideal. There are plateaux at either end of the reef, from 25-40 metres, but the steep walls drop off to more than 100 metres. The soft corals and gorgonians are luxuriant and colourful. It is an ideal site to experience the larger pelagic marine life including manta ray, hammerhead shark and oceanic whitetip.

Daedalus is another superb dive site; this remote offshore reef offering the chance of more big fish encounters. Together, the Brothers, Elphinstone and Daedalus form an offshore marine park, with many liveaboard departures focusing on these dive sites.

Fury Shoal is an area where many reefs lie close to each other, some are exposed and some sheltered, many with dramatic sheer walls plunging to over 40 metres. There are canyons, multiple caves and passages where groupers and morays lurk. The variety of coral is stunning with beautiful brain and fire corals. Schools of fusilier and anchovy hover above the reefs until suddenly attacked by fast moving tuna whilst Napoleon wrasse cruise majestically by.

St John’s Reef is another exceptional liveaboard diving region in the far south of Egypt’s Red Sea. The dive sites here offer immense variety with drop-offs, tunnels and stunning hard-coral formations. The marine life and the colours of the soft corals are truly amongst the finest in the Red Sea, but many dive sites are not difficult, proving popular with underwater photographers and those looking for a more relaxed itinerary.

Liveaboard departures to Fury Shoal and St John’s often also take Rocky Island and Zarbargad. Rocky Island hosts a fringing reef that circles the entire perimeter of the island, dropping steeply to astonishing depths. Zabargad Island is characterised by an enormous mountain reaching out of the water, surrounded by a lagoon and circling reef.

About Red Sea Liveaboards

When's the best time to dive the Red Sea by liveaboard

Liveaboard diving holidays are available in the Red Sea throughout the year and there is always something interesting to see.

The most popular periods amongst divers fall in two windows. The first window runs from March through to June, when surface temperatures are very pleasant and water temperatures are warming fast.

After the heat of the summer months, September through to November is an ideal time to visit, with very comfortable air temperatures coupled with warmer seas proving just right for scuba diving.

The diving remains excellent in summer months, but this is a period that those sensitive to heat may struggle with.

December to February brings cooler temperatures, but this is a great time to experience quieter dive sites or to grab a bargain.

Who is liveaboard diving in the Red Sea suitable for

We offer a range of Red Sea liveaboards, with itineraries giving you a wide variety of diving options, depending on your area of interest and your level of experience. For many, it represents their first liveaboard experience, but the diversity and quality of diving on offer ensures accomplished divers return again and again.

As a minimum, an Advanced Open Water qualification and 30 dives is recommended to get the most from a liveaboard experience.

A liveaboard diving holiday to the Red Sea is always a hugely popular choice for groups and dive clubs, with attractive offers available and dive sites offering something for a range of experience levels. If you are travelling as a large group, you can even decide to pre-book a week of wrecks or favourite reef dives, according to your group preferences. We have lots of experience arranging liveaboard diving holidays for groups and our friendly team is always on hand to discuss your plans.
