Tanzania Resorts

Be dazzled by beautiful Indian Ocean islands, flourishing coral reefs, and marine encounters from the very small to the very large on a diving holiday to Tanzania.

Anthias on a coral reef in Tanzania.

Tanzania may be most famous as a destination for an African safari, however her coastline offers some diving gems that are well worth the attention of divers. Her coastline faces the beautiful Indian Ocean, where a ribbon of three beautiful islands rise above the turquoise blue waters; all of which have excellent diving opportunities.

The most famous is the spice island of Zanzibar, with its pristine beaches and melting pot of cultures.

Flanking Zanzibar to the north and the south are Pemba and Mafia. These smaller islands may take a little more time to reach, but divers will be rewarded with some beautiful reefs and marine life, including whale sharks which gather around Mafia Island seasonally.

A diving holiday to one of Tanzania’s beautiful island escapes can also be combined with a wildlife safari for the ultimate African adventure.

Why We Love Tanzania Resorts

Where’s the best resort-based diving in Tanzania?

Zanzibar, Mafia Island and Pemba are all blessed with some excellent diving. Here, you will find flourishing reefs and varied marine life to see for all levels of diver.

Off the main tourist trail, the sleepy, charming Mafia Island provides access to Chole Bay, the oldest and largest marine protected area in Tanzania. This area is renowned for the highest biodiversity in the region, where beautiful coral reefs play host to marine life from the humble nudibranch to the giant grouper.

To the north, Pemba Island completes this trio of islands. The island rises out of the Pemba channel, bringing clear visibility, blue water drop-offs, and healthy shallow reefs.

What to see when

For lovers of marine life, one of the most exciting draws of a holiday to Tanzania is the chance to see whale sharks. These gentle giants gather off the coast of Mafia island each year from November through to February, with responsible snorkelling excursions run by a local conservation organisation.

This small island also provides the opportunity to see turtle hatchlings scrambling for the ocean between June and September, while humpback whales splash and spray as they pass the island on their annual migration during August and September. Tanzania’s other islands can also see whale sharks and humpback whales at similar times.

Turtle and dolphin can be seen at any time of year, along with reef species common to the area.

About Tanzania Resorts

When is the best time to resort dive in Tanzania?

Tanzania is best dived during the dive season from July through to March. This time of year brings calmer seas in addition to a drier climate, making for more agreeable conditions for diving and snorkelling. The period from April through to June is known as the ‘long rains’ and does not bring ideal conditions for a scuba diving holiday.

Those looking to combine diving with a wildlife safari are best visiting between June and September, budget allowing.

Who is resort diving in [country name] suitable for?

While Tanzania has some stunning dive sites, the diving is not difficult and all levels of diver will be able to enjoy her riches. Snorkellers are very welcome, and these charming islands are also well suited to those looking to learn to dive on their holiday.
