Diving Highlights

Kendwa

Kendwa is a favourite amongst divers for its calm waters and excellent visibility, making it ideal for beginners and underwater photographers alike. During most dives here, you glide in gentle currents past coral gardens filled with leaf fish, scuttling blennies, and the occasional crocodile fish—perfect for those keen to spot macro marine life.

Nungwi

Celebrated for its dramatic underwater terrain and notable position in the north, Nungwi's steep walls and sloping reefs support gatherings of big game fish, reef sharks, and Napoleon wrasse. The area is a magnet for advanced divers interested in deeper dives and those who appreciate great visibility, especially during the clear months when migratory marine life can also be seen from the boat.

Mnemba Atoll

A trip to the Mnemba Atoll—one of the best dive sites in the Indian Ocean—is essential for any scuba diving Zanzibar adventure. This renowned marine reserve offers not only astonishing coral gardens and great visibility, but also seasonal encounters with majestic whale sharks and schools of yellowfin tuna. Dive masters often lead small groups to secret bommies and drift dives; Aquarium and Wattabomi, with their calm waters and brilliant light, are excellent for beginners and those devoted to underwater photography. More advanced divers enjoy sites like Kichwani, and are rewarded with sightings of turtles, giant groupers, schools of barracuda, the distinctive Napoleon wrasse, and the occasional reef shark.

Tumbatu Island

Nestled on the outer rim of Zanzibar's northwest coast, Tumbatu Island remains one of the best dive sites, cherished for its tranquillity and biodiversity. Its outer reefs and coral patches shelter an impressive variety of tropical fish, plus elusive pipefish, leaf fish, the elusive frogfish, nudibranchs, and curious octopus.

Dive centres from Kendwa and Nungwi lead trips to Tumbatu Reef and Magic Reef, sites celebrated for their long stretches of healthy coral and unique macro life; advanced divers enjoy wall dives and exploring current-swept areas, where exciting encounters with blue-spotted stingrays, cuttlefish, and octopus await among the reefs.

Leven Bank

A renowned seamount north of Zanzibar Island, Leven Bank is a highlight for advanced and experienced divers. Strong currents at this offshore site attract schools of yellowfin tuna, giant trevallies, barracuda, and even pelagic eagle rays. The occasional white-tip reef shark is sighted on deeper dives, bringing big game fish action to those seeking an adrenaline-fuelled day out. The dramatic drop-offs and great visibility make Leven Bank a highlight amongst local dives in Zanzibar, often considered one of the region's best dive sites.

Types of Diving

Boat Diving

Boat diving forms the heart of any Zanzibar holiday, with the island's dive centres offering access to a remarkable variety of sites. The experience can differ depending on where you stay; dive centres in the north at Nungwi and Kendwa provide access to the thrilling drift dives of Leven Bank, a hotspot for large game fish and pelagic species, as well as the reefs around Tumbatu Island. From Matemwe, on the northeast coast, the world-famous Mnemba Atoll is the principal destination, its protected coral gardens brimming with butterflyfish and damselfish.

Wreck Diving

Stone Town and nearby Bawe Island offer opportunities for those passionate about wreck diving. The artificial reefs created by sunken vessels such as the Royal Navy Lighter or the Great Northern are encrusted with coral and buzzing with marine life—groupers, morays, lionfish, glassfish, snappers and scuttling crustaceans abound. With most dives suited to a range of experience levels, exploring these sites blends maritime history with marine adventure, making diving in Zanzibar an irresistible proposition.

Technical Diving

Some dive centres on Zanzibar are recognised for catering to technical divers. The Big Wall at Mnemba Island is legendary—a site featuring a dramatic vertical drop to 70 metres, with natural caves, overhangs, and gatherings of schooling pelagic fish, including barracuda and dolphin fish. Technical divers joining trips here benefit from expert dive masters, professional equipment, and safety procedures suitable for even the most advanced divers.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling is extremely popular in Zanzibar and thrives at sites like Mnemba Atoll and Kendwa Reef, where you can observe vibrant reef fish, playful turtles, and elusive sea creatures up close. Many trips begin from the island's stunning beaches or local villages such as Nungwi, where small group excursions ensure personalised guidance from knowledgeable dive centre staff. These excursions are as much an introduction to the marine reserve as they are an invitation to help preserve Zanzibar’s aquatic beauty.

Resort Info

Weather & Dive Conditions

The island boasts a warm, tropical climate year-round, with temperatures typically ranging between 25°C and 30°C. The best time to visit for calm seas and optimal visibility is during the dry seasons from June to October or December to February, when weather conditions are best, water temperatures are at their warmest, and visibility can extend up to 30 metres.

These periods also offer the best opportunities to encounter pelagic species, such as whale sharks and manta rays. The rainy seasons of April to May and November bring reduced visibility and can make conditions less favourable for diving. However, with a variety of dive sites accessible from the east, north, and west coasts, there are always opportunities to explore Zanzibar’s underwater world.

Things to do in Zanzibar

While the main focus for many is beneath the waves, the island of Zanzibar is equally famous for its topside attractions. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town tells the story of the archipelago’s diverse cultures, where visitors can wander through bustling markets, discover local artists, and explore insightful museums. Nature lovers will enjoy a trip to Jozani Forest, home to the native red colobus monkeys, which can be seen on guided walks. From the aromatic spice farms that earned Zanzibar its nickname as the 'Spice Island' to the giant Aldabra tortoises of Prison Island, every activity is enriched with the warm welcome of Zanzibar’s people.

Exploring these remarkable attractions provides an unforgettable glimpse into Zanzibar's vibrant culture, history, and natural beauty, making any diving holiday even more memorable.

Planning your Holiday

Travel to Zanzibar is straightforward, with regular flights connecting via Dar es Salaam, as well as other major European and Middle Eastern hubs. Upon arrival, a journey of between 20 minutes and 1.5 hours brings you to your accommodation, with options ranging from boutique hotels to beachfront guesthouses.

Many visitors choose to extend their diving adventure, combining a Zanzibar diving holiday with a few days exploring the untouched reefs of Pemba Island or the protected marine park of Mafia Island, known for its eco-friendly lodges and abundant marine life.

Alternatively, visitors pair their underwater adventures with an iconic East Africa safari in one of Tanzania's national parks. Experience the thrill of visiting world-renowned national parks such as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, for the opportunity to witness vast herds of wildebeest, majestic lions, and graceful giraffes, before returning to the unmistakable beauty of Zanzibar’s coast.
