Where’s the best resort-based diving in Oman?

Oman’s resort-based diving opportunities are congregated on the north coastline of the country. Heading south-east from the capital Muscat are excellent resort diving options, with excellent dive centres and hotels catering for a range of budgets, and healthy marine life in abundance. The 84-metre-long Al Munassir wreck is another feature of this area.

Heading north-west from Muscat provides more impressive diving opportunities, and access to the Daymaniyat Islands. This nature reserve of nine stunning islands can be reached on a day diving trip and are considered to be Oman’s finest dive sites. The islands brim with marine life including turtle and leopard (zebra) shark, and are blessed with beautiful coral reefs. Dolphin encounters are also possible.

What to see when

Whatever time you visit Oman, the nutrient-rich waters ensure there will be a huge amount of marine life to see, from dolphin to leopard shark.

Possibly the most iconic visitor is the whale shark, and Oman is one of the best places to be able to encounter one of these beautiful animals from the comfort of a resort. The season for whale shark in Oman falls between September and November, when the warmer waters provide a huge amount of food to feast on.

Oman is home to five species of turtle. Two of these species, the hawksbill and the green turtle, regularly nest on the beaches around Qantab, giving those staying at the Shangri-la the opportunity to witness this behaviour. Turtle nesting season is from January through to May, with a chance to see the hatchlings until August each year.

Oman is also known for both whale and dolphin, with species including common dolphin, spinner dolphin and humpback whale. While they are unlikely to be seen underwater, dolphin are regularly seen from boat trips, and dedicated dolphin watching trips can be arranged locally throughout the year.

About Oman Resorts

When is the best time to resort dive in Oman?

Oman’s marine life is largely present year-round, however the seasons dictate the overall diving experience on offer. November through to May is the cooler season, bringing the most pleasant temperatures on land. The beginning and end of this period are optimal for diving, with a good blend of cooler air temperatures and warmer water temperatures.

June through to October can be very hot in Oman. These months do also have the warmest water temperatures, although plankton blooms can reduce visibility. The end of this period is popular due to the opportunity to encounter a whale shark.

Who is resort diving in Oman suitable for?

With direct flights from the UK, colourful diving and good accommodation options, a holiday to Oman can suit a wide range of people, from beginners and families, through to more experienced divers.

A wealth of beautiful and historic sites on land along with boat trips and snorkelling opportunities will also appeal to those with a mix of divers and non-divers, or those looking to combine underwater experiences with land-based exploration.

Resort-based stays can also be easily combined with a liveaboard in Oman.
