Where’s the best resort-based diving in Egypt?

Egypt boasts a multitude of popular resort-based diving locations that attract divers from all around the world.

Sharm el-Sheikh, located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is a renowned diving hub known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Hurghada, on the eastern coast of Egypt, is another popular destination that offers a wide range of dive sites suitable for all skill levels. Dotted along this coastline are a number of other exceptional diving locations. The pleasant marina of El Gouna is spoilt for great boat diving options and offers the chance to dive the famous Abu Nuhas wrecks, while Soma Bay, Safaga and El Quseir are excellent choices for a Red Sea diving holiday, with shore diving available.

Marsa Alam, situated further south along the Red Sea coast, offers uncrowded dive sites, some superb shore diving and the opportunity to encounter larger marine species such as sharks and manta rays. Those looking to really get away from it all may choose to venture farther south to Hamata, giving access to the beautiful Fury Shoal reefs. Dahab, a laid-back town on the Gulf of Aqaba, is another hidden gem for divers seeking tranquillity, excellent shore diving and pristine diving conditions.

Most locations offer a wide range of accommodation choices for divers, with excellent facilities and all-inclusive meal options available at many larger hotels. Smaller hotels and dedicated dive resorts are available in certain locations for those looking for a more intimate experience. Our carefully crafted portfolio of Red Sea hotels, dive centres and dive resorts ensure a quality, hassle-free diving holiday for Regaldive guests.

What to see when

Egypt's waters boast a diverse range of marine species, ensuring every dive is a chance to encounter something new and exciting. The Red Sea is home to over 1,200 species of fish and 10% of the world's coral reefs, making it one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet.

Coral reefs play host to green and hawksbill turtle, spotted eagle ray, Napoleon wrasse, blue spotted stingray, clownfish, moray eel, longnose hawkfish and hundreds of other colourful and characterful species that can be seen consistently through the year, and throughout the Red Sea.

Dolphin, while seldom actually spotted underwater on a dive, are another common highlight of this region and are often seen surfing the bow wave on boat journeys to and from a dive. Bottlenose, spinner and Risso’s dolphin are all present in these waters. Dolphin House is a popular dive site accessible from Hurghada and El Gouna which offers the chance to swim with bottlenose dolphins, while Sataya Reef (also known as Dolphin House) promises a similar encounter for those staying in and around Marsa Alam. Encounters are year-round, but the warmer seas from May through to November add to the enjoyment.

While some of the best shark encounters are found on the offshore marine parks frequented by liveaboards, a number of shark species can be seen on a resort-based diving holiday. Whitetip reef shark and grey reef shark can be seen throughout the year on coastal reefs. For more experienced divers visiting the southern Red Sea around Marsa Alam, Elphinstone Reef is known for a variety of shark encounters. Oceanic whitetips can be observed here between October and November, with hammerhead, tiger and silky shark encounters also possible.

Whale shark and manta ray can also be seen in Egypt’s waters on occasion, but are not regular encounters. While staying in a resort, it is possible to see these magnificent animals along the mainland coast between Hurghada and Marsa Alam, or while diving the Ras Mohammed Marine Park from Sharm el-Sheikh. They are best seen between May and August, although there is little pattern to their behaviour.

Dugong are another iconic species seen in Egypt’s waters, with a family group resident in the waters around Marsa Alam throughout the year.

About Egypt Resorts

When is the best time to resort dive in Egypt?

Egypt offers year-round diving opportunities, and the best time to visit depends on your preferences.

Amongst divers, September to November is considered a sweet spot with near perfect conditions for scuba diving. This time of year brings warm water temperatures and vibrant reef life coupled with slightly cooler temperatures on land.

The summer months also offer warm water temperatures, making it an ideal time for diving in the Red Sea. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so dive sites can be more crowded, and it can be too hot for some on land; all the more reason to go diving!

Spring is also a very popular time to dive the Red Sea. Waters are gradually warming up through March to June, and the period is known for excellent visibility and pleasant temperatures on land.

December to February are cooler months and see fewer visitors, but diving is still enjoyable.

Who is resort diving in Egypt suitable for?

Whether you're a seasoned diver or a beginner looking to take your first plunge, Egypt offers a range of diving options to suit your needs.

Diving from a resort is a great choice for those looking to learn to dive or take their next diving qualification, with dives sites ideal for training, great marine life and professional tuition. The Open Water certification allows you to dive independently with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 metres.

The course typically includes theory sessions, confined water training, and open water dives, and can be booked as part of your holiday package through Regaldive for extra peace of mind. Once certified, you'll have the skills and knowledge to explore the underwater world with confidence.

Those already qualified may wish to take their Advanced Open Water qualification in Egypt; the next rung on the diving ladder. This enjoyable two-day course allows you to dive to 30 metres and teaches you additional skills. The course is highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a liveaboard, or explore more advanced dive sites.

Fun diving from a resort is also hugely popular in Egypt, and for good reason. More experienced divers visiting Sharm el-Sheikh will delight in the thrilling boat diving on offer in the Ras Mohammed Marine Park and Tiran Strait, while trips to dive the SS Thistlegorm are also possible. El Gouna and Hughada offer superb boat diving to local dive sites including the Giftun Islands and the Abu Nuhas wreck graveyard.

Those who like to combine shore diving and boat diving will be more suited to dive sites a little farther south, starting at the delightful Soma Bay. El Quseir, Marsa Alam and Hamata are particularly known for shore diving options, but are equally blessed with dive sites accessed by boat.

Elphinstone is a highlight for those choosing to stay in the Marsa Alam region, while those making the effort to venture south to Hamata will be rewarded with the opportunity to dive the extensive Fury Shoal reef system.

Diving Egypt from a resort

Staying at a dive resort in Egypt can be combined with either a liveaboard or a trip to see the sites of Ancient Egypt to get more from your Red Sea diving holiday.

Extend your time with a relaxing stay in a resort, either before or after a liveaboard. Enjoying a few nights prior to a liveaboard adventure not only helps to ensure you are relaxed and acclimatised, but also provides an ideal window to complete a scuba review. Alternatively, you may choose to complete your Advanced Open Water course to ensure you get the most from your liveaboard.

Arranging a few nights in resort after your liveaboard also makes for a great combination, providing time to relax, or to embark on a few more dives. Most liveaboards set sail from either Hurghada or Marsa Alam, with many hotels to choose from in both areas.

Egypt is not all about the wonderful diving, of course. Equally famous and impressive are the tombs, pyramids and artefacts of Ancient Egypt. Diving holidays can be combined with time in Luxor to take in the Valley of the Kings, or extended to take in the Great Pyramids of Giza and artifacts from the tomb of Tutankahmun in Cairo.
