Where’s the best resort-based diving in Thailand?
Thailand is a vast country, stretching over 1,700 kilometres from north to south. Her diving is concentrated in the southernmost areas of the country, however, where a thin strip of land called the Isthmus of Kra separates the Gulf of Thailand in the east from the Andaman Sea to the west.
Diving is possible on both coasts, but the Andaman coast offers the greater diving opportunities. Phuket is the entry point to this region and a good base for a diving holiday, providing access to the Racha Islands and the dive sites around Ko Phi Phi.
Farther north, Khao Lak is another good spot for divers, with access to good local dive sites, along with the chance to visit the Similan Islands on a day trip. Diving is also available on Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta. Many choose to combine a resort-based stay with a short liveaboard adventure to the Similan & Surin Islands, while tailor-made extensions to explore more of Thailand can be arranged upon request.
What to see when
Thailand is a great destination for all kinds of reef life, with green turtle, hawksbill turtle, octopus, cuttlefish and more present at any time.
Both oceanic manta ray and whale shark can be seen on the Andaman coast, although encounters are not regular. Some posit that the best chance of sightings falls between February and May, with manta rays also more likely early in the season around November. However, there are no distinct seasons and this ocean wanders may make an appearance at any time.
About Thailand Resorts
When in the best time to resort dive in Thailand?
The best conditions for diving on Thailand’s Andaman coast fall between November and April each year, when winds are favourable. November and December can still bring some changeable weather conditions from time to time, with January to March usually offering wall-to-wall sunshine and the calmest seas.
Towards the end of March and into April, the weather continues to be beautiful, but humidity begins to increase. Some time in May or early June, the winds change and Thailand’s green season begins. Diving to some sites remains possible, but certain dive sites are off limits and diving may not be possible every day.
Who is resort diving in Thailand suitable for?
The diving in Thailand is ideal for both beginner and intermediate divers looking for some fun and quality diving. It is a hugely popular destination to learn to dive, with excellent tuition and plenty of sites ideal for taking your Open Water course. This beginner-friendly course includes online learning, pool practice, and open water dives, equipping you with the skills and confidence to explore the wonders of Thailand and beyond.
Intermediate divers will find sites at a good level of challenge without being too deep or difficult, with a huge amount of marine life to see. A resort-based stay to complete the Advanced Open Water course before embarking on a first liveaboard is also popular.
As a destination that is more friendly on the wallet, it is also a good destination for groups, families and dive clubs with variable experience levels. With so much to offer on land as well as underwater, Thailand also suits those wishing to combine diving with topside adventures on a tailor-made holiday.
