Diving Itinerary

Bull sharks are one of the most iconic of all shark species, but are rarely encountered by divers. Those looking to get up close to a bull shark, and learn more about these incredible animals, can do so between December and March in the waters of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Each year, a group of pregnant females are known to gather in the waters around Playa del Carmen to give birth to their pups. Safe and highly controlled diving excursions are organised, with time also to be educated on their behaviour and biology.

This region is also famous for the Cenotes, making for a unique and magical combination.

Additional information about Mexico’s bull sharks:

Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are among the most fascinating and misunderstood species of shark. Unlike many of their ocean-dwelling relatives, bull sharks are uniquely adapted to thrive in both salt and freshwater environments, thanks to their ability to regulate internal salt levels. This adaptability has allowed them to travel far upriver—some individuals have even been recorded thousands of kilometres from the sea, in freshwater systems across the globe. Their name derives from their stocky build, blunt snout.

These large, powerful predators can grow up to 3.5 metres in length and are typically found in warm, shallow coastal waters. As apex predators, bull sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems by controlling populations of prey species. Their diet is varied and opportunistic, including fish, rays, crustaceans, and even other sharks.

Each year, from December to March, the warm waters off Playa del Carmen in Mexico become a seasonal gathering point for the sharks, who are drawn to this stretch of the Riviera Maya coastline as part of their reproductive cycle. It is believed that pregnant females migrate here to give birth in the nearby shallow estuaries, where the young can grow in relative safety before venturing into deeper waters.

Unlike their reputation, the bull sharks off Playa del Carmen are typically calm and unaggressive when encountered by divers. The clear Caribbean waters offer excellent visibility, and seeing a bull shark cruise silently past is a truly humbling experience. These encounters not only offer a rare glimpse into the lives of these remarkable animals but also help raise awareness about the importance of shark conservation in the region.

Safety is the top priority:

Safety is the top priority, especially when diving with an apex predator. Bull shark dives are managed in a controlled way, using on the most experienced instructors. There are also some key requirements to join these dives, including:

  • Minimum 25 dives
  • Excellent air consumption and buoyancy
  • Dive equipment in dark colours only (rental gear is available)
  • Full length wetsuits
  • Responsible attitude to diving and awareness of risk

In addition, divers wishing to dive with a camera and external strobes will require an extra guide, arranged in advance (additional cost).

On every dive, a contribution is also made to a local shark charity to aid conservation efforts.
