The Hallaniyat Islands are a small archipelago of islands off the south-east coast of Oman. Rugged and barren above the islands come alive beneath the sea, where vibrant marine life both large and small competes for attention. The area is also home to the 140m City of Winchester wreck.

These remote islands are only reachable by liveaboard between November and April each year, with highlights including dolphin, manta ray, turtle and possibly humpback whales.

Hallaniyat Islands Information

Marine life

This area is rich in marine life, with large schools of fish, honeycomb moray eels and green turtles cavorting amongst the flourishing hard and soft corals. Manta rays are occasionally seen, while dolphins are regularly encountered. Humpback whales are resident in the area, and best seen in February and March.

Wreck diving

The Hallaniyat Islands are the resting place of the City of Winchester wreck. Sunk on the 6th August 1914, near the beginning of the First World War, this British merchant vessel was on its maiden voyage when it was captured by German forces. The vessel was taken to the Hallaniyat Islands, where is was scuttled, and lost to the world until 1986, when it was discovered by divers.

The 140m long wreck sites upside down in 30 metres of water, and has become home to a diverse array of marine life including grouper, barracuda and dolphin.

Dive conditions

The diving conditions in this region can be quite dynamic, with visibility changing quickly and strong currents possible. This all adds to the excitement of the destination, but means it is best suited to more experienced divers.

Twin-centre diving

A trip to the Hallaniyat Islands in southern Oman can be extended in a number of ways. For topside nature lovers and adventurers, there is more to explore in southern Oman, including waterfalls and dramatic mountains.

There are plenty of options on and aroudn Oman’s northern coastline, including more diving at the Daymaniyat Islands, or excurions to explore mountains, oases, and starlit desert skies.

Planning your Holiday

Visas

Entry requirements vary from country to country, and it’s important to check the latest visa information well before you travel. Some destinations may allow visa-free entry for a limited period, while others require an eVisa or a visa obtained in advance. To ensure you have the correct documentation for your trip, we recommend checking the official advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or contacting the relevant country’s embassy or consulate. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.

Passports

Before you travel, make sure your passport is valid for the full duration of your trip and meets the entry requirements of your destination. Many countries require at least six months’ validity beyond your planned return date, while others may have different rules. For the most reliable and up-to-date information, visit the UK Government’s passport guidance or the official travel advice pages for your destination. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.

If you’re planning to travel to or via an EU country (with certain exceptions) your UK passport must meet two key requirements, it must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter the country and it must be valid for at least three months after your planned departure date.

Vaccinations & Health Advice

Health and vaccination requirements differ depending on where you're travelling. Some destinations may require proof of specific vaccinations or recommend certain precautions to protect your wellbeing.

We’re not qualified to provide you with specific advice on vaccinations and strongly recommend that you contact your healthcare professional before you travel to discuss the inoculations you may need to consider.

For trusted guidance on health and vaccination advice, refer to the NHS Travel Vaccination AdviceMasta Travel Health or Travel Health Pro websites.
