Ponta do Ouro
Just over the border from South Africa, Ponta do Ouro is a thrilling destination for adventurous divers. Often combined with Aliwal Shoal, the offshore reefs and pinnacles are a haven for sharks.
Tucked into Mozambique’s southern coastline, just north of the South African border, Ponta do Ouro is a laid-back coastal town with a growing reputation for world-class diving—particularly its thrilling shark encounters.
Its name, meaning “Point of Gold,” reflects the area’s golden beaches and rich marine life, set against a backdrop of sand dunes and tropical forest.
Diving here takes place on a chain of offshore reefs between Ponta do Ouro, Ponta Malongane and Ponta Mamoli. These reefs are known for their dramatic topography, strong currents, and nutrient-rich waters that attract an extraordinary variety of marine life—including sharks. Bull sharks and hammerheads are regularly sighted, along with dusky sharks, tiger sharks, and blacktip sharks.

Ponta do Ouro Information
Qualified divers
Ponta do Ouro is a superb destination for more experienced divers seeking high adrenaline encounters. Most diving is done from RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) launched directly from the beach. The diving is suitable to those with a good level of fitness and a sense of adventure.
Strong currents are common, with some diving on deep, exposed pinnacles.
The current-washed reefs and pinnacles draw in thrilling marine life however. Numerous species of shark can be seen, with the list of possible sightings including bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, oceanic black-tip sharks, tiger sharks, dusky sharks and grey reef sharks. Typically, the most exciting shark encounters are between November and March each year.
Marine life
Sharks are the main draw for Ponta do Ouro, with more then ten different shark species possible. Bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, oceanic black tip sharks and tiger sharks are the most sought after species, but it is also possible to encounter silver tips, leopard sharks, spinner sharks, dusky sharks and nurse sharks.
Beyond the sharks, the reefs offer sightings of turtles, manta rays, devil rays, eagle rays, ribbontail rays, moray eels, pelagic fish and a kaleidoscope of reef fish.
Between June and October, migrating humpback whales pass close to shore and are often seen breaching or heard underwater during dives. Dolphins are frequently spotted during surface intervals, adding to the area’s wild appeal.
Dive conditions
The summer months in Ponta do Ouro run from December through to March. These months are warmer and wetter. They are also the most exciting months for shark lovers, with the best opportunities to witness bull, hammerhead and tiger sharks. The location of Ponta do Ouro means cyclones are also possible during this period, but are not common.
The ‘winter’ months run from June through October. These months are cooler, but also drier. It is at this time of year that humpback whales traverse up the coastline, with dolphin sightings also a regular occurrence.
Typically, water temperatures range from 21°C in winter to 28°C in summer, with visibility averaging 15–25 metres.
Twin-centre diving
Ponta do Ouro is typically combined with diving in Aliwal Shoal in South Africa for an exciting shark-themed double header. These locations are around eight hours drive apart. It is also possible to extend itineraries to take in some of South Africa’s iconic topside wildlife.
Resort Info
Popular with South Africans, Ponta do Ouro lies just 10 kilometres over the border into Mozambique. With sandy streets, small friendly guesthouses, and a lively local market, it retains a charming, low-key atmosphere. The town is small and walkable, with a mix of dive centres, restaurants, and simple accommodation options—ideal for divers who value marine life over luxury.
Planning your Holiday
Ponta do Ouro is typically reached via South Africa. When combined with Aliwal Shoal, Durban is the entry point, with numerous airline options available. If Ponta do Ouro is visited as a standalone location, flights can be arranged to Maputo in southern Mozambique.
