Tanzania: Kilimanjaro Trek

This lesser known and more remote Lemosho route up Kilimanjaro takes you away from the crowds and through the beautiful Lemosho forests. Reputedly one of the most stunning hikes in Africa, your trek starts in the rainforests on Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and takes you over the Shira Plateau and the Karanga Valley to Uhuru Peak itself.

Day 1: On arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred to your accommodation for an afternoon of relaxation in preparation of the climb ahead. Overnight stay: Moshi (Half Board)

Day 2: After a short drive the adventure begins at Lemosho roadhead (2100m). Today's trek takes you through the unspoilt rainforest to Big Tree Camp, which lies at around 2780m. You’ll be walking for three to four hours. Overnight stay: Big Tree Camp (Full Board)

Day 3: A full day’s trek takes you to the high altitude desert plateau of Shira Caldera into Shira Camp 1, lying at an altitude of 3500m and about seven hours walking. Overnight stay: Shira Camp (Full Board)

Day 4: Today you trek east across Shira Plateau via Shira Cathedral to your camp at Moir Hut, which is located at 4175m and five hours walking. Overnight stay: Moir Hut Camp (Full Board)

Day 5: This morning is a gentle ascent walking on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the western breach until we reach Lava Tower (4640m). This afternoon an optional trek to Arrow Glacier at 4830m. Overnight stay: Lava Tower (Full Board)

Day 6: Begin with an early morning climb up the Barranco Wall to admire the views of Mount Meru and the plains below. Continue on to Karanga Camp at 3930m. In the afternoon you can do an optional acclimatising trek up the nearby slopes. Overnight stay: Karanga Camp (Full Board)

Day 7: Today you walk to Barafu Camp (4640m), resting in the afternoon before an early dinner. Tonight is an early night in preparation for tomorrow’s summit attempt. Overnight stay: Barafu Camp (Full Board)

Day 8: Waking at around midnight to commence the trek to Stella Point, you continue around the rim to the highest point; Uhuru Point (5895m). After reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit, you return via Stella Point and descend to Millenium Camp (3790m). About 14 hours walking. Overnight stay: Millennium Camp (Full Board)

Day 9: Today is an early start, walking through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. From here you are transferred to your hotel where you can relax and unwind, taking a well-deserved rest. Overnight stay: Moshi (Half Board)

Day 10: You will be transferred to the airport for your return flight home. Alternatively you may choose to connect to other tours and destinations in Tanzania or further afield in Africa to extend your stay.
