Exumas
Explore vibrant coral reefs, blue holes and wrecks across the Bahamas’ most enchanting island chain.
Stretching 120 miles through the heart of the Bahamas, the Exuma Cays are a glittering string of more than 350 islands and sandy cays set in crystal-clear turquoise seas. Much of this region lies within the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park – the world’s first protected marine reserve of its kind. With strict “no-take” rules in place, the park’s reefs are among the healthiest in the Caribbean, teeming with fish, corals and pelagic life.
Exumas diving offers a captivating mix of wall dives, coral gardens, wrecks and swim-throughs, with visibility that regularly exceeds 30 metres. Highlights include the spectacular Cathedral at Dog Rocks Reef, the fish-laden Jeep Reef and the shark-patrolled Blacktip Wall. Between dives, visitors can kayak through hidden lagoons, snorkel in the shallows or relax on deserted white-sand beaches.

Exumas Information
Dive sites
The Cathedral at Dog Rocks Reef is one of the Exumas’ most celebrated dives – a large swim-through illuminated by shafts of light that dance over clouds of silversides. At Jeep Reef, strong currents keep the corals vibrant, attracting dense fish life and creating a kaleidoscope of colour. Amberjack Reef is great for sightings of grouper, jacks and reef sharks, while Blacktip Wall offers thrilling encounters with sharks and pelagics. For something different, Cracked Coral Head provides multiple swim-throughs within a towering coral mound, and Pillar Wall reveals steep drop-offs cloaked in black coral and sponges.
Marine life
The Exumas are renowned for their vibrant biodiversity and exceptional water clarity. Divers can expect to encounter reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles and schooling horse-eye jacks on many sites, alongside moray eels, parrotfish and colourful angelfish. Healthy coral growth dominates the shallow in the marine parks, with sea fans, tube sponges and black coral adorning the walls. Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to admire too, from blennies and gobies to shrimp and nudibranchs. Seasonal visitors include blacknose sharks at the Lost Blue Hole near Nassau and the occasional hammerhead patrolling the deeper walls.
Wreck diving
A highlight of Exumas diving is the Austin Smith Wreck, a 27-metre Bahamian Defence Force cutter that sank unexpectedly in 1995 while being towed for scuttling. Resting upright in 18 metres of water, it is now carpeted in coral and home to schools of snapper, barracuda and curious reef sharks. The wreck provides excellent photographic opportunities and is suitable for recreational divers. Elsewhere, smaller artificial reefs such as the coral-covered Jeep Reef add character to the region’s already rich underwater landscape.
Snorkelling
For non-divers or those seeking relaxed surface adventures, snorkelling in the Exumas is equally rewarding. The shallows surrounding many cays host flourishing coral gardens, home to reef fish, rays and turtles. Popular snorkelling areas include the marine sanctuary of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, where fishing is prohibited and marine life abounds. Calm lagoons and sheltered bays make conditions perfect for beginners, while more confident snorkellers can explore blue holes, sandbanks and vibrant reefs just metres from shore. With water clarity that rivals anywhere in the Caribbean, the Exumas deliver unforgettable encounters both above and below the surface.
Dive conditions
The Exumas offer excellent diving conditions year-round, with water temperatures ranging from 24°C in winter to around 29°C in summer. Visibility is consistently very good thanks to the region’s sheltered geography and minimal rainfall. The calmest seas are typically between November and May, making this an ideal time for liveaboard itineraries.
Planning your Holiday
Flight Info
Direct flights to Nassau are offered by British Airways numerous times a week, while daily options are available via the USA. Liveaboards operate on a weekly basis out of Nassau, with resort-based diving options from Nassau also available.
Visas
Entry requirements vary from country to country, and it’s important to check the latest visa information well before you travel. Some destinations may allow visa-free entry for a limited period, while others require an eVisa or a visa obtained in advance. To ensure you have the correct documentation for your trip, we recommend checking the official advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or contacting the relevant country’s embassy or consulate. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.
Passports
Before you travel, make sure your passport is valid for the full duration of your trip and meets the entry requirements of your destination. Many countries require at least six months’ validity beyond your planned return date, while others may have different rules. For the most reliable and up-to-date information, visit the UK Government’s passport guidance or the official travel advice pages for your destination. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.
If you’re planning to travel to or via an EU country (with certain exceptions) your UK passport must meet two key requirements, it must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter the country and it must be valid for at least three months after your planned departure date.
Vaccinations & Health Advice
Health and vaccination requirements differ depending on where you're travelling. Some destinations may require proof of specific vaccinations or recommend certain precautions to protect your wellbeing.
We’re not qualified to provide you with specific advice on vaccinations and strongly recommend that you contact your healthcare professional before you travel to discuss the inoculations you may need to consider.
For trusted guidance on health and vaccination advice, refer to the NHS Travel Vaccination Advice, Masta Travel Health or Travel Health Pro websites.
