Micronesia
Head to Micronesia to dive the legendary wrecks of Truk Lagoon or Bikini Atoll.
The Federated States of Micronesia comprises four island groups in the western Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Islands, the Caroline Islands, the Marshall Islands and the Gilbert Islands.
Amongst scuba divers, it's more famous is the location of both Chuuk Lagoon and the Bikini Atoll. In short, some of the finest wreck diving in the world. Often known amongst divers as Truk Lagoon, eager wreck divers flock here to dive the San Franciso Maru, the Rio de Janeiro Maru and the other wrecks that once made up a mighty Japanese WWII fleet. Bikini Lagoon is home to the infamous ghost fleet, and a mecca for technical diving enthusiasts.
Micronesia is also home to Yap, where manta rays abound, along with 600 other remote islands in total.
Why We Love Micronesia
Nowhere else on Earth offers the chance to delve into such incredible history, with the chance to dive a range of outstanding shipwrecks in recreational diving limits, warm tropical water and superb visibility.

Micronesia Information
About Micronesia diving
Micronesia may not be the simplest diving destination to reach, but for experienced divers, there’s good reason to add it to your ‘must dive’ list.
While Yap and the Marshall Islands offer excellent diving opportunities, it’s often the Japanese World War II wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon (commonly referred to as Truk Lagoon) that garner the attention of divers. Chuuk lagoon was a stronghold of the Japanese during World War II, an ideal base from which to conduct their operations in the region. During two days of attacks in February 1944, the Americans sunk more than 50 sips and over 275 aircraft. This devastation led to 60 wrecks that now lie on the lagoon’s seabed, waiting to be explored by divers, complete with an array of fascinating artefacts.
Bikini Lagoon, in the Marshall Islands, is home to the extraordinary Ghost Fleet. Following the conclusion of World War II, a combined fleet of American and captured Japanese vessels was assembled in the Pacific. Two nuclear detonations - one aerial, one submerged - caused catastrophic damage, leaving a dramatic legacy beneath the waves. Today, over seven decades later, the area is considered safe for diving, with specialised liveaboard trips available for experienced technical divers eager to explore. Notable wrecks include the USS Saratoga, HIJMS Nagato, and USS Arkansas.
Resort & liveaboard diving
Both liveaboard and resort based diving options are possible in Chuuk, however if budget allows, liveaboard diving tends to provide the best experience.
Bikini Lagoon is only accessible on seasonal technical liveaboard expeditions.
Tailor-made & twin-centre holidays
Micronesia combines very well with Palau, where one can enjoy superb and varied diving. Superb coral reefs are home to excellent shark encounters, while Palau is also blessed with some excellent wreck diving. At certain times of year, spectacular spawning events add to the appeal.
A diving holiday to Chuuk (Truk) also combines well with the Philippines, where a multitude of options await, including the wrecks of Coron Bay for those looking for an historic double header.
About Micronesia
When to dive Micronesia
Micronesia can be dived year-round, however the best conditions tend to be from December through to April.
February is a popular month to dive in Chuuk Lagoon as it is the anniversary of Operation Hailstone. Extended expeditions to dive Bikini Atoll are often run from May to September each year.
Who is Micronesia diving suitable for
Diving in Micronesia is for experienced divers only who are familiar with remote diving destinations and comfortable with the lengthy journey required to reach the destination.
