Baja California

Outstanding diving and snorkelling adventures await in Mexico’s Baja California.

School of big-eye trevally jack in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico

Baja California, stretching along Mexico’s western coastline, is an outstanding destination for scuba diving and wildlife encounters. The region includes the diverse Sea of Cortez, and the remote Magdalena Bay, famous for its dramatic sardine run. These waters host an astonishing range of marine life, from colourful reef fish and turtles to whale sharks, mobula rays, and migrating whales.

The Sea of Cortez offers both calm, shallow reefs perfect for beginners and more dramatic drop-offs and deep walls for more accomplished divers. Meanwhile, Magdalena Bay provides a unique, seasonal spectacle where thousands of sardines attract dolphins, striped marlin, sharks, sea lions, and migratory whales. Accessible via La Paz or Cabo San Lucas, this region promises much for both divers and marine life enthusiasts.

Baja California Information

The unusual geography created by this vast peninsula creates a unique array of habitats for wildlife, with both diving and snorkelling options available. From classic diving in the Sea of Cortez to expeditions to encounter incredible natural phenomena, exciting opportunities abound.

Dive sites

Baja California boasts an incredible variety of dive sites. In the Sea of Cortez, Cabo Pulmo National Park features pristine coral reefs, sharks, dolphin and numerous species of turtles. Cerralvo Island hosts manta rays and playful sea lions, and the dive sites of Espiritu Santo National Park offer vibrant shallow reefs. El Bajo and Las Animas are renowned for hammerhead shark aggregations in winter months, while the Midriff Islands provide rich biodiversity and seasonal whale shark sightings.

In Magdalena Bay, you can witness the dramatic sardine run, where the dense bait balls attract striped marlin, sharks, dolphins, sea lions, and migratory whales, while an expedition to La Ventana promises encounters with vast schools of mobula rays. Remote islands like Magdalena and Santa Margarita form protected habitats, offering tranquil waters for both scuba diving and snorkelling. Each site presents a unique underwater landscape, from coral gardens and rocky pinnacles to deep pelagic drop-offs.

Marine life

The waters of Baja California teem with wildlife. Divers can encounter playful California sea lions, dolphins, turtles, seahorses, and vibrant reef fish. Giant manta rays, mobula rays, and hammerhead sharks patrol deeper waters, while seasonal migrations bring whale sharks, humpback whales, blue whales, sperm whales, and orcas.

Magdalena Bay is particularly spectacular during the sardine run, attracting striped marlin, sharks, and large pods of feeding dolphins. Coral gardens and rocky reefs support countless invertebrates, tropical fish, and schooling jacks, creating a visually rich environment for photographers and marine enthusiasts alike.

Snorkelling

Many of Baja California’s most spectacular wildlife events are best enjoyed while snorkelling, allowing more mobility, flexibility and better chances to catch the action. Encounters in Magdalena Bay offer truly extraordinary, expedition style snorkelling, while encounters with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez, and schools of Mobula munkiana are best enjoyed from the surface of the water.

Diving conditions

Baja California offers excellent diving throughout the year, with variations in marine life depending on the season. The Sea of Cortez is at its calmest from December to July, ideal for beginners and reef exploration, although water temperatures are at their coolest.

Spring and summer bring mobula ray aggregations and orca sightings, while May to early winter is prime for hammerhead shark encounters at deep dive sites. Magdalena Bay’s sardine run typically occurs in late winter and spring, drawing large predators and creating thrilling dive conditions.

Whale migrations from winter to spring, including blue whales, humpback whales, and sperm whales, provide unforgettable encounters. Each season offers unique opportunities to experience the diverse ecosystems and abundant marine life of Baja California.

Twin-centre diving

Diving in Baja California can be a combination of both liveaboard and resort-based diving, while the area is also the jumping off point for liveaboard cruises to Socorro, where encounters with giant Pacific manta rays, sharks and dolphin await.

Planning your Holiday

Flight Info

The entry points to Baja California are Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. Both towns have airports with connections to various cities in the USA, along with Mexico City, allowing a choice of routes.

Visas

Entry requirements vary from country to country, and it’s important to check the latest visa information well before you travel. Some destinations may allow visa-free entry for a limited period, while others require an eVisa or a visa obtained in advance. To ensure you have the correct documentation for your trip, we recommend checking the official advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or contacting the relevant country’s embassy or consulate. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.

Passports

Before you travel, make sure your passport is valid for the full duration of your trip and meets the entry requirements of your destination. Many countries require at least six months’ validity beyond your planned return date, while others may have different rules. For the most reliable and up-to-date information, visit the UK Government’s passport guidance or the official travel advice pages for your destination. Other nationalities should check with their own consulate/embassy.

If you’re planning to travel to or via an EU country (with certain exceptions) your UK passport must meet two key requirements, it must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter the country and it must be valid for at least three months after your planned departure date.

Vaccinations & Health Advice

Health and vaccination requirements differ depending on where you're travelling. Some destinations may require proof of specific vaccinations or recommend certain precautions to protect your wellbeing.

We’re not qualified to provide you with specific advice on vaccinations and strongly recommend that you contact your healthcare professional before you travel to discuss the inoculations you may need to consider.
