Southern Caribbean Information
Southern Caribbean diving
The Caribbean Sea is a diver's paradise, offering an array of underwater experiences across its diverse regions.
To the east lie the Windward and Leeward Islands, which form the Caribbean's stunning eastern boundary. The Windward Islands, including destinations like St. Lucia and Grenada, are known for their dramatic volcanic landscapes that plunge into the sea, creating spectacular drop-offs, pinnacles, and drift dives. These islands are exposed to the Atlantic, meaning currents can be stronger, attracting larger pelagic species like sharks and rays. The Leeward Islands, such as St. Kitts and St Maarten, tend to have calmer conditions. They boast a mix of fringing reefs, historic shipwrecks, and an abundance of macro life, making them ideal for underwater photography.
Further south and west, just north of South America, the southern Caribbean is a diver's dream. This region, including islands like Curacao and Bonaire, enjoys a warm tropical climate and calmer seas, as it's tucked away outside the main hurricane belt. The gentle currents make it perfect for divers of all levels, while bringing in nutrients that keep the underwater ecosystems thriving. You'll get to explore a true wonderland teeming with colourful sponges, sea turtles, and tropical fish, plus dramatic drop-offs and fascinating wrecks. With its amazing visibility and rich biodiversity, it's a bucket-list destination for anyone looking for an unforgettable diving adventure.

If you're after a bit more adventure, the Leeward Islands might be right up your alley. Scuba diving liveaboard holidays in St Kitts, St Maarten, and Saba are a diver's dream for drift dives and jaw-dropping volcanic pinnacles. The strong currents there take you through vibrant marine life, making every dive a thrilling dive. Over at St. Kitts and St Maarten, you'll find a quieter vibe with a mix of beautiful reefs and interesting wrecks, perfect for exploring at your own pace.
When to dive the Southern Caribbean
Wondering when’s the best time to dive in the Southern Caribbean? Honestly, it depends on where you’re headed and what you want to experience!
If the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) are calling your name, you’re in for a treat. These islands are a diver’s paradise pretty much all year round since they sit outside the hurricane belt. Think calm waters, fantastic visibility, reaching 30 metres and over, and loads of Caribbean marine life. But if you’re looking for the very best time, April to November is often the sweet spot. The water’s warmer (27-29°C), the seas are calmer, and there are fewer strong currents—perfect for exploring coral reefs and shipwrecks with ease.
Planning a trip to the Windward Islands, like St. Lucia or Grenada? December to May is your go-to. It’s the dry season, which means gorgeous sunny weather, breezy air temps, and no hurricane worries. Underwater, you’ll get excellent visibility (often over 24 metres!) and might even spot whales or dolphins hanging around. Plus, those volcanic underwater landscapes and thriving reefs are an absolute must-see.
If the Leeward Islands, like St. Maarten or St. Kitts, are on your list, aim for November to April for the best diving conditions. It’s the dry season, and if you visit between January and May, there’s even a chance of spotting humpback whales. The green season (June to October) brings a bit more rain and a small hurricane risk, but it also means fewer crowds, warm waters, and vibrant reef life—turtles and reef fish galore! Visibility is still fantastic when the weather plays nice, so it’s a great time to enjoy quieter dive spots.
No matter where you go, the Southern Caribbean has something magical waiting underwater!
