There was a certain commotion at the London dive show earlier this year. Amidst the anticipated and popular stands was an extremely different and entirely unexpected form of underwater promotion. As the throngs of people devoured all the show had to offer, it was almost comical to observe an array of individuals stop, laugh and descend into shock at the bright blue stand in front of them.

Yet they aren’t afraid of the presence of a human and pose perfectly for the underwater photographer. I was picked up in the morning from my hotel, the impeccable Sunrise Marina Resort in Port Ghalib, and a few minutes later was welcomed at the Emperor Divers dive centre on the far side of the marina. As this was a work trip rather than a diving trip, I hadn’t brought my dive gear.

From the mainland, divers can explore the ocean reefs along the Riviera Maya coastline. The reefs have a colourful mix of classic Caribbean corals and are populated by large shoals of grey snapper and porkfish, which form highways along the overhangs. I also saw spider crabs, nurse sharks, flounders, flamingo tongue snail, and plenty more marine life.

The team at the Oasis Dive Resort in Marsa Alam are thrilled to have green turtles nesting on the beach!
One morning at sunrise at the end of January, a guest observed a green turtle depositing her eggs on the beach just in front of the resort. From the tracks leading to and from the water, the team think that it was one female.
